Strategic goals

Stimulate the use of European astronomy for development by building and fostering a community and mobilise resources to support relevant actions. The E-ROAD will contribute to the implementation of Goal 3 of the IAU Strategic Plan 2020 - 2030: The IAU promotes the use of astronomy as a tool for development in every country. This is aligned with SDG17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development

Support the development of research capacity within developing countries, through collaborative programmes between universities, institutes and individual researchers from European and developing countries and the construction of astronomical facilities in developing countries that benefit the local communities. This is aligned with SDG 9.b: Support domestic technology development, research and innovation in developing countries and IAU Strategic Plan Goal 2: The IAU promotes the inclusive advancement of the field of astronomy in every country.

Design, prototype, implement and evaluate educational projects that use the cosmic perspective to foster global citizenship, namely a culture of peace and the environmental sustainability of our planet. This is aligned with SDG 4.7: By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development and SDG 13.3: Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and contributes to achieving SDG 16 (Peace). This goal also contributes directly to the IAU OAD Flagship Project: Science diplomacy through Astronomy: Celebrating our Common Humanity
