Astronomy and education for sustainable development

Attract young people to science and technology careers

The E-ROAD collaborates with the EU H2020 space education project spaceEU on common goals. Education is an integral part of sustainable development and therefore one of the focus areas of the E-ROAD.

Workshop

The E-ROAD and spaceEU are organising a workshop together: Space Science for Societal Challenges. The event brings together experts from space research, education, industry and public engagement to collaboratively use space science for sustainable development through innovation and entrepreneurship. Pilot activities will be developed to implement in collaboration with the EIT Climate-KIC.

Advocacy actions

We advocate for the crucial role of education, public engagement and outreach in the European space sector. Education in schools and informal settings is essential to excite young people about science and technology and to attract them to careers in the space sector. Communication and public engagement with space science are important to preserve public support for European space programmes but also to show what amazing things are happening. We will lobby at European and national levels through, amongst others, dedicated policy briefings and meetings with Members of European Parliament.

Space in textbooks

We engage with educational textbook publishers to promote the use of space resources in school books. Astronomy and space are a unique way to motivate children about science and technology careers. Incorporating high-quality educational resources developed collaboratively by space experts and professional educators in textbooks will broaden the number and diversity of students reached.
